Way back in the days of just arcade machines, we all knew where we stood, besides in front of the machines. You played the game, if you were good enough you’re three initials went on to a high-score list. That’s how high scores worked, you were either good enough to make the list, or you weren’t.
Things, however, have changed. Achievements, Trophys, whatever you call them, they’ve been around for a while. Steam uses them, XBox has them, they’re on your PS3, they have truly invaded. Thing is, whilst they aren’t inherently evil, they do serve as something of an annoyance to me in some places.
Look at the new game/piece of art that is Heavy Rain. It’s up for debates whether it really counts as a “game”, but that makes very little difference when it comes to the fact that Sony have forced Trophys on the developers. It’s a game that is designed to create a personal experience, as soon as trophys come in, it forces the developers to show their hand and hint at the “right” way to play the game. We don’t need trophys for that, you progress in the story line, that’s enough isn’t it?
