[MCM/EG] Fairytale Fights

November 1st, 2009

A great thing about browsing games available is finding little games you’d heard very little, or indeed no, information on and Fairytale Fights is a lovely example. Whilst wandering around MCM the first day, packed and hot, we were ready to flop onto any game without a large queue, and how glad I am that we did so!

PlayLogic developed Fairytale Fights is an hacky-slashy-cutesy-adventure game. A genre which I may have just made up instead of looking up what it’s officially listed as, but one which I think fits it pretty perfectly. You play one of 4 characters; Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The naked emperor or Beanstalk Jack, seeking to restore their rightful fairytale status after someone steals their fame. At least, I think that’s the story… I was a little distracted by pulverising gingerbread men with a waffle iron and sliding around in their blood, before enjoying pushing one of my teammates into a river of acid we were trying to jump over.

[MCM] Mmm… swag

October 26th, 2009

[Tom, Wooster]

Along our mystical expeditions around MCM, we encountered varying levels of free stuff. Could this be the wondrous and legendary swag we’ve heard so much about? I believe it is!

Upon walking into the Excel Centre, one of the first thing to come out of my mouth was how homely, how natural, how mall-like it seemed. “No, I can’t possibly use this to fuel my materialistic ways, can I?”. Well I was wrong.Almost immediately, pendrives, teeshirts and posters were thrusted into my hand. I was in heaven. So I went on to explore the entire convention, seeking out my booty…

Head Explosions are -always- an advantage. -Always-

A demo of Borderlands, a new ‘RPS’ (Role Playing Shooter) from 2K Games, makers of Bioshock, was playable at MCM and lucky for you we were one of the first to do so. This is a cell shaded first person shooter that makes me happy, away from dreary browns and a world of generic space marines. Set in the distant future; colonists have travelled to a distant planet in search of a better life and the prospect of money. After several years the planets orbit changes the seasons and many horrifying creatures emerge.

[MCM] The Alternative Viewpoint – Intro

October 25th, 2009

So, surprisingly I am in London, which makes a change from the not so sunny flat plains of Norfolk. I’m here for my first convention ever; the Movies/Comics/Media Exposition London 2009 (which incidentally I was dragged to by site-admin Tom ‘GeneShark’ Gibbard and editor Brett ‘zxpiesqrd’ Page. I am under the sneaky suspicion I was only invifted along to the convention because I have lots of money tumbling around in debitcard-space; which both of the above are apparently short of).

Being my first ever convention – or “con” for short; as the convention aficionados like to call them – I was not very sure of what to expect. The broad range and scope of the MCM Expo, for gamers, anime lovers, and film geeks, meant that I was really unable to look at the examples of any of the specific conventions (i.e. ComicCon and PAX) which target a specific genre of audience. Would I meet people in cosplaying costumes, raging nerds, card game enthusiasts, or yaoi fangirls? As it happens; all four and many more in-between. What a day it has been.
