So, number one. The big numero uno. The one you have all been waiting for. The one that gets this massive build up and you all decide that you can skip this because you just want to know the answer. So I don’t know why I’m still typing. You’ve all skipped to the next paragraph anyway. If you haven’t, why not? Go on. Go.
It’s a vampire film, based on a book. It’s about young love more than it is about vampires. There’s no sex in it, which for a vampire film is unusual. It received a very impressive box office and it is my undoubted film of the year. As soon as I saw it I knew it was going to be at the top of my list for the year, and if it wasn’t it would really take some beating.
So a vampire film about kids and love that isn’t really about vampires. I know what you’re all thinking, and no, it’s not Twilight. It’s a Swedish vampire film, Let The Right One In. I saw the film before I read the book, then I saw the film when it got a second release. The book added more, helped me understand the film more, but it wasn’t required reading.
It’s hard to get great performances from children, but here the kids outperform the adults almost consistently. The film is beautifully shot and is, almost certainly, the film that Twilight should have been.
It’s rare to see a Swedish vampire film, and it could be argued that, really, this isn’t a vampire film at all, just a film with vampires in it, but that doesn’t change the simple fact that, out of all the films that have hit the silver screen this year, Let The Right One In is the best.
So, a recap of the list:
10. Anvil (DVD)
9. Coraline (DVD)
8. In The Loop (DVD)
7. The Wrestler (DVD)
6. Star Trek (Review) (DVD)
5. Watchmen (Review) (DVD)
4. District 9 (Review) (DVD)
3. Moon (DVD)
2. Up (Review) (DVD Feb 15th 2010)
1. Let The Right One In (Review) (DVD)
I would just like to add a few honourable mentions to The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Where The Wild Things Are and The White Ribbon. All are brilliant films, and if only there were more number between one and ten, all would feature.
It’s been a great year for films all round, even if 3D is threatening to ruin it for everyone, but if you are looking form some of the 2009 films to pick up on DVD as you enter 2010, there’s your list. Want to know what to avoid? I don’t like picking a worst film of the year, but that Michael Bay film was dull, boring, and pointless.
