[12/11] Weekly Play #5

November 12th, 2009 by Tom 'GeneShark' Gibbard Leave a reply »

It’s been a week already?! Well, a week and a day (Posted last week’s post on Wednesday by mistake) and it’s time for Weekly Play, Hooray!

In the new, and probably improved, Weekly Play I’m asking you (Yes, you!) to comment on this post telling us what you’ve been playing this past week and what you think of it! Every week I’ll pick my favourite comments from the week before and post them up, along with what I’ve been playing of course!

“Done a bit more on Halo:Wars too, trying to get more achievements and boost my Gamerscore. I won’t drone on about those too much because, well, it’s Halo.” – Bumblebee_Prime

“I’m still playing Morrowind.” The entire comment, from Robtimus. Thanks for your thought-out input Rob!

This week I’ve -not- been playing Bejeweled Blitz, because it went down for varying amounts of time… as you can probably tell, this was NOT GOOD. Except it did release me from it’s hold for a little bit so I could go off and play some Left4Dead, mostly with the wonderfully amusing Barricade Builder mod, allowing me to build lovely doom fortresses out of standard crescendo points!

I’ve  also been playing through Castlevania IV, ‘Fuck you, waterfall’ is all that can be said about that.

That’s it from Weekly Play this week… now it’s your turn. Comment below with what you’ve been playing and maybe we can get some discussion going like last week!

  1. Well I have been on Mass Effect A LOT this week, trying to complete the second play through and get some achievements. Level 56 :D. Also been playing a bit on COD 4 because I haven’t got the new one yet. Been trying to complete it all on Veteran and the only level I haven’t done is the last one, thanks to a terrorist shooting me in the back right at the end, RAWR! Other games include L4D2 demo and FIFA 10.

  2. Right this week I decided to return to the PS2 once again onto Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Since it’s actually game number 5 of the series (previous titles being Blood Omen, Blood Omen 2, Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2) and that the storyline contains a massive amount of time travel, paradox’s and the changing of history it’ll be pretty hard to explain here (though if you are still interested check this site out) so I won’t instead I’ll focus on the gameplay.

You play as two characters (switching character after each chapter); the “evolved” (evolved in the sense hes become less human over millenia) vampire Kain and the wraith (who was once a vampire) Raziel; each with varying abilities and techniques. For example, Kain as a vampire is critically injured by water as it’s like acid to him (which makes a temple dedicated to water frustrating to do), whereas Raziel can freely swim in it. Another key difference is Raziel’s ability (as used in the soul reaver series) to switch between the spectral (the world of the dead) and material realm (our world). This allows interesting puzzle mechanics as in the spectral realm, buildings and ledges distort allowing you to access previously unreachble areas.

As Raziel himself is actually dead and belongs in the spectral plane, he loses health constantly whilst manifesting himself into our world. Kain also continuously loses health due to bloodlust. The only way to heal is to consume an enemies soul (Raziel) or drink their blood (Kain) after defeating enemies in combat. Combat is the main difference between this game and its predecessors. The previous games made enemies attack you in one or twos in which you had two attacks you could deal to them, but allowed you to retreat in all but a few cases; this game, however, takes more of a devil-may-cry style of fighting in which enemies usually are fought in contained areas and require tactical combo usage to defeat (yet this does make much more interesting fights).

Right I think ive rambled a bit long and disjointedly (like the timeline) here so ill sum up by saying if you like any action adventure game you’ll enjoy this, but play at least the soul reaver games first as this assumes you will have (story wise).

This week I bought and started to play the new Kingdom Hearts game. 358/2. It bridges more of the gap between 1 & 2. You play as Roxas from the start of 2. I like the new upgrading scheme and missions. You do missions for Xemnas. Mainly collecting hearts as the keyblade is the only weapon capable of doing the job. The gameplay is just as awesome as 1 & 2 but the graphics aren’t so good as expected with the DS. Most missions do involve submissions that you can use to get more exp, a higher rank and better equipment. But most of the submissions I find are too hard… The first was facing a boss with 7 bars of health, the ability to block and drain your HP while restoring his when he attacks you.

Would definately recommend but play 1, Chain of Memories and this then 2 to make the story make sense.

(I still have to play Chain of Memories.)
