[4/11] Weekly Play #4

November 4th, 2009 by Tom 'GeneShark' Gibbard Leave a reply »

We’re going to try out a new version of Weekly Play this week. Each week I write this lovely little article, mentioning what I’ve been playing and I feature my very favourite comment from the last Weekly Play post. Why would I feature my favourite comment? Because I’m asking for your opinions on what you’ve been playing this past week! (Or two, seeing as we missed a week at Eurogamer)

Over the past few weeks I’ve played a lot, thanks to MCM and Eurogamer! A few favourites would be Left4Dead2, Fairytale Fights, Blue Toad Murder Files and the new Super Mario Bros. Wii. Coupla things wrong with each of them, but hopefully they were/will be fixed before release. Since I’ve been home I’ve been hit with retro-fever, and have been playing Super Mario Bros. 3 for about 4 nights running. Hooray! I’m downloading the lovely Left4Dead2 demo as we speak, so hopefully I’ll be able to write a little more about that next week.

As for my favourite comment, I’ll have to choose from the submissions last post:

“A new craze has hit action games and it’s a craze I don’t like; blurring the screen to add drama. If you had made the game dramatic to begin with, you wouldn’t need to blur the screen to the extent that each time I turn around I feel like I’m doing so in an office chair……on heroin….anyway…In Merc 2 as I will now call it out of a neccessity to protect my fingers from typing, every time you move there is a RIDICULOUS amount of motion blur. The only complaint I can find bigger then that is the AI of the opponents, after standing IN FRONT of one for 3 minutes waiting for him to attack me, I aimed my gun at his feet and let off a round, killing him instantly.

If you want to learn to fight an enemy as useless as a crime fighting chicken, only to find the chicken kills itself, cooks itself, de-bones its meaty ass and hands you itself on a plate with adequate seasonings, this game is for you. Else, you’re best off stealing a BB gun, and shooting a pigeon.” Razeth on Mercenaries 2

Rightio, time to beg isn’t it? I implore you to leave a comment, this feature doesn’t work without you!

  1. OK then I have been playing ALOT of XBOX 360 games since I got it back about 3 weeks ago. Mainly Forza 3, FIFA 10 COD:WAW aand The Orange Box. Also been playing Diamond and Sapphire (I didn’t say it for your sake Brett) on the DS. Also Perfect World MMORPG, its alright but there’s an annoying 17 year old kid trying to get me to play it every night *Ahem*.

  2. I’ll tell you what I’m not playing. Bejeweled Blitz. Because it’s error’d up and I’m going a tiny bit insane from withdrawal symptoms D:

  3. Right, well when I can drag myself away from you lot I’ve been on Dark Chronicle; a PS2 classic. Putting yourself in the role of a young inventor called Maximillion you fall into an epic quest of magic and mystery(Sorry for being vague I skipped rather a lot of the story.

Gameplay consists of dungeon crawling to get essential parts for Georama (the unique feature of the game) which involves you creating a perfect village which would eveolve into something useful in the future. You also have a trusty camera with you to take pictures of various things. This will then give you ideas to make something though I still have no idea how he invented a missle cannon for a robot from Mushrooms, a rotating sign and a wooden box.

The main story should not take you too long, as long as you complete the dungeons fast, but to truly complete the game you need to put many hours into it. I’ve been playing it for a while and I’ve still not completed everything.

Ok, thats enought now, if you want to play it you may have a bit of trouble though. It’s quite rare and still holds a high price for a new copy.

    I’m still playing Morrowind.

I’ve been playing more ODST because I finally got my own copy :D.
Done a bit more on Halo:Wars too.
Trying to get more achievements and boost my Gamerscore.
I won’t drone on about those too much because, well, it’s Halo.
But I have been playing Mass Effect. I heard it was a good game so I got it. The rumours were true! It’s a great game combining the “Run around invicible coz you have shields” from Halo with the “Hide and shhot so you dont get hurt from Gears Of War. It is stlighty free roam as you can explore other planets and star systems etc but most are restriced to scanning it from your spaceship. This got annoying on the 3 mission i did where it pointed to a galaxy but then didnt tell you the star system or planet the person you were looking for was on. =\ I also like the fact you can carry 4 weapons with you(shotgun, sniper, pistol and assault rifle) and you just upgrade those 4 instead of having to choose a couple until the run out of ammo. There is no ammo :D but there is overheating D:. There could have been a vehicle tutorial. I got half way through a mission with a nearly dead vehicle when i accidentally found out the machine gun wasnt its only weapon =\. They kept the rail gun attachment quiet… Finally for an xbox game the rendering (if thats what you call it) is crap. I preview a white and orange set of armour and i just became a white blob until it rendered 5 seconds later D:.
    And im done. Sorry :P

  6. Mass Effect is a great game and funny thing is I started playing that again this week too recently :S, it is kinda realistic though with the exploration when you see that the planets have temperatures of 1000+C! I’ve also been playing Morrowind recently :S, are you people following me?

Over the past week I’ve been playing far too much Half-Life.
It’s a game I’ve been meaning to get around to for ages, but never actually touched until Monday.
What can I say? I’m addicted to it now. Any procrastination time I have available, I’m playing it. I don’t think I’ve even got that far through the game, but I like it already. I especially like the fact that there aren’t any cut scenes, the story is just told through characters speaking to you as you play through the game, while you retain your first person view.
Another game I’ve got hold of after going to the talk at Eurogamer is the original Alien Breed. I haven’t played it too much, but it is challenging. Ammo is in short supply and aliens are coming at you from all sides as you work your way through labarinthine levels. Maybe I’ll have more to say about this game once I’ve played it a bit more…
