A great thing about browsing games available is finding little games you’d heard very little, or indeed no, information on and Fairytale Fights is a lovely example. Whilst wandering around MCM the first day, packed and hot, we were ready to flop onto any game without a large queue, and how glad I am that we did so!
PlayLogic developed Fairytale Fights is an hacky-slashy-cutesy-adventure game. A genre which I may have just made up instead of looking up what it’s officially listed as, but one which I think fits it pretty perfectly. You play one of 4 characters; Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The naked emperor or Beanstalk Jack, seeking to restore their rightful fairytale status after someone steals their fame. At least, I think that’s the story… I was a little distracted by pulverising gingerbread men with a waffle iron and sliding around in their blood, before enjoying pushing one of my teammates into a river of acid we were trying to jump over.
Mmm, the multiplayer. Drop in drop out for up to four players is a lovely thing to have (especially since it means only player one has to get over a part you’re finding -really- tricky), but there’s a little problem. Killing each other is too much fun. Now, seeing as the game offers an infinite supply of lives, I’m not sure how much of a problem that really is… I mean why shouldn’t I enjoy slicing my teammates with an axe and watching their… lovely red blood… spill out all over the stage… sliding around… covered in it… -Wait, what was I saying?
Ah yes, right. The friendly fire has a tendency to distract you from the game, and depending on how much of a sense of humour your fellow players have, certain sections may descend into an all out battle. Take the aforementioned river of, what I can only assume was acid. To get across, we had to leap on rapidly moving AND sinking bars of chocolate. It was hard. Made harder by the respawn explosions throwing others into the river, people pushing each other into the river and hilariously, the one person who managed to get across throwing rabbits at those attempting to cross. Damn we lost a whole lot of lives there.
What’s that? Giant beaver? Yeah you need swordfish for that.
The gore too, was pretty amazing. Take for example, this beast of a boss fight. After making it throw up acid a coupla times, and then slashing it with swordfish, it falls backwards onto an ARRAY OF CIRCULAR SAWS in a deliciously satisfying cutscene. Oh, then it comes back, covered in cuts. Awesome! A second time on the saws sees it lose it’s battle, popping up briefly as you shoot over a waterfall, limbs and eyes hanging by a thread. Eeeeeeewwww. Aweeeesome. Eewsome?
It was both a thankful change of pace from the endless queues around EuroGamer and a saddening pity to see Fairytale Fights lay unplayed for an awful lot of the expo. A little overshadowed by the huge titles on display it would seem, but those who missed it certainly missed out. Akin to Blue Toad Murder Files in that respect. Note to expo goers, check out the games that you’ve never heard of and no-one seems too excited by. You might be pleasantly surprised, and if not, you’ve not queued for them anyway!
Released this past week for PS3 and Xbox 360 (October 27th) and with a release date to be announced for a PC release, Fairytale Fights isn’t going to rock the gaming world, but it’s certainly a nice distraction, more fun with friends to play with.
