[Retro?] SEGA promises all new 2D Sonic game

According to a Gamespot interview with Sega”s brand manager Ken Ballough, Sonic will be returning in 2010 in an all new 2D Sonic game. Is it time to get our hopes up?

Most of you will remember Sonic’s early outings on the Megadrive (Genesis to those of you across the pond), and maybe even the 8-bit Master System with fondness, the first Sonic games being things of excellence. 8-bit Sonic the Hedgehog on Master System II was my earliest gaming memory, and damn, it still plays well to this day.

The trailer announces “Speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up”, complete with sound effects you’ll probably recognise. Including the famous SE-GA chorus. Oh yes, and it’s all going to be in HD. Delicious.

Please. Please Sega. Don’t disappoint once again, because this is what you were good at. Sonic works best in a 2D environment and the old Megadrive/Genesis games were and still are, amazing.

This announcement comes of course, comes shortly before the 10th anniversary of Sega’s Dreamcast.

What do you think Sega need to steer clear of in this new outing?

I’m really not sure whether or not I want to get excited about this. I mean yay for two-d Sonic but I mean Sonic Unleashed promised a return to Sonic’s roots and look what happened there.

  2. Hmm, true. Though the newly posted teaser site with what looks like some nice 2D classic Sonic level tiles seems promising…
