Overall
This is a must have game for clinical lycanthropes, and everyone else who owns a Wii.
An older installment of the Legend of Zelda series, it comes for both Wii and Gamecube. However, not too many people have a Gamecube anymore, with Wii, XBox 360, and PS3, but the gameplay is enhanced by the Wiimote, so should you have the sudden urge to buy this off of eBay or such, get it for Wii. If you don’t have a Wii, get one too.
The main storyline is filled with puzzles and action, a great mix. Although the auto-aiming system takes a bit of the fun out of it, keep in mind that most enemies are actually deadly, and not pathetic weaklings for you to kill with one swipe of your sword.
The Story
The plot goes like this: Hyrule has been overrun by Twilight, darkness from an evil sorcerer that comes from the Twilight Realm. It’s up to Link to stop it. But here’s the catch: Link is affected by the Twilight, and instead of becoming spiritized like everyone else, he becomes a wolf that can interact with all the beings of Twilight, but none of the Hyrulians. Along the way, a supposed friend with a shady past, Midna, will help you by giving you tips on how to solve a puzzle or beat a boss, and occasionally harnessing her powers in various ways.
The Wolf
The wolf that Link becomes is awesome in many ways. While a wolf can’t use a sword or light a lantern, it has special senses that humans don’t. It can sense spirits, like the Hyrulians in Twilight, or evil beings called Poes. It can capture the scent of a friend — or an enemy — and trail it. And it can dig its way under otherwise impassable walls.
The Gameplay
The puzzles that appear every so often are very challenging. Whether it’s sliding giant blocks on slippery ice, or manipulating statues that copy your movement, the puzzles are hard but give you a great feeling of satisfaction when you finally beat them.
The bosses are much the same, but instead, the strategy is replaced with pure action, although you will generally need to work out a plan. But where puzzles require pure brainpower, this will require quick reflexes to react to your boss, especially if it has a giant sword of Twilight that will utterly destroy you if you get hit by it.
This game easily has 50 hours of gameplay (trust me, my friend was playing that using a walkthrough, and they’re still not finished with it), and there are some fun minigames, so you can compete with your friends for the highscore. There are also some sidequests, although not as many as I would like, usually involving collecting things, like Poe souls or Golden Bugs.
My Rating
This game deserves a 10/10. It’s got great gameplay, a nice plot, and a long but not boring storyline. If you have a Wii, and you see it at a store, don’t hesitate a moment to get it. Plus, instead of the mad chicken attack, if you hit a chicken too many times, guess what happens? You don’t have hundreds of chickens flying at you — you get to be the chicken. That’s right. For a limited period of time, you can fly around the stage being a chicken. What more do you need?
Now how about some comments?
This is the only title in the franchise that I simply cannot “get into” – I loved OOT, Majora and Windwaker… and yet this just doesn’t feel right.
TLOZ is easily the best Nintendo game ever…My best 1 is either Ocarina of Time or Oracle of Ages.
